Gatefold Sleeve<\/strong><\/p>\n Sounds and Colours by Charlie Higgins 18 December, 2012<\/p>\n I\u2019m not sure what the Portuguese translation for \u201cbadass\u201d would be, but it\u2019s a fitting description for the explosive sounds on Sintoniza L\u00e1, the long awaited sophomore album from BNeg\u00e3o & Seletores de Frequ\u00eancia. Carioca MC Bernardo Santos, a.k.a. BNeg\u00e3o, waited nearly a decade to rejoin forces with the band responsible for 2003\u2019s breakout record Enxugando Gelo, among the first albums available via free download in Brazil. Whether Santos really spent those last nine years hard at work in the studio or drinking caipirinhas on the beach is beside the point; Sintoniza L\u00e1 is a groove-filled powerhouse that effectively blends dub, hip-hop, R&B, punk and afrobeat.<\/p>\n Santos was already established in Rio\u2019s hip-hop scene when Enxugando Gelo first made waves. Influenced by Chico Science & Na\u00e7\u00e3o Zumbi \u2013 to whom he paid tribute to at the closing ceremony of the Summer Olympics in London \u2014 Santos was a key member of the socially conscious rap-rock outfit Planet Hemp. The Seletores de Frequ\u00eancia\u2019s infectious sound stems from both this group and his previous solo project, The Funk Fuckers.<\/p>\n In many ways Sintoniza L\u00e1 is a more accessible album than it\u2019s predecesor, which featured fewer singable choruses and more experimentation. Sintoniza L\u00e1 is a party album at heart, and it\u2019s filled with hooks, deep grooves and slick horn arrangements. The addictive opener \u201cAltera\u00e7\u00e3o (\u00c9a!)\u201d is an ass-shaking homage to Fela Kuti that perfectly sets the tone of the album. Next comes \u201cO Mundo,\u201d with its surf-rock intro, catchy refrain and solid vocal delivery by Santos. \u201cRea\u00e7\u00e3o (Panela II)\u201d is a burning dub-reggae track fortified by colourful afrobeat horns.<\/p>\n Unlike a lot of MCs, Santos gives his band ample room to rock out, as on the Rage Against The Machine-esque punk rock instrumental \u201cSubconsciente\u201d and the psychodelic funk of \u201cNa Tanquila.\u201d This is a departure from Exugando Gelo, which is more lyrically driven and more closely tied to the backing band concept. Fortunately, the Seletores are unflinchingly solid as a unit; drummer Robson and bassist F\u00e1bio Kalunga drive the train, with the tasty rhythm guitar of Fabiano Moreno and Pedro Selector\u2019s killing trumpet fleshing out the sound.<\/p>\n For BNeg\u00e3o\u2019s fans, the nine-year wait was well worth it. Sintoniza L\u00e1 was chosen as album of the year at this year\u2019s MTV Brazil Music Awards and has been a runaway hit with critics and fans alike.
